The financial sector has seen phenominal returns over the past 3 or 4 trading sessions based on "better than expected" earnings reports, at least so far ! Tuesday looks shakey at best in financials with AXP reporting lower than expected numbers after the bell & the likes of WM, WB, & dare I include FITB set to report on tuesday 7-22 (they're numbers are not expected to be pretty !) I'm looking for a generally down day on tuesday in financials with possible exceptions here & there (ie: RF ?).

Cash

I think cash balances should be credited with the money market return at the end of the given month. You could earn 5% in cash this year! Also, are dividends and interest included in the total return calculation?

I think you should show account return percentage since portfolio inception and S&P 500 return since porfolio inception. That way you could really see how the portfolio has performed relative to a benchmark.

Index funds

I don't like stocks, but I like stock index funds. An "average investor" will earn the market return less any expenses he incurs for trading, custody, etc. However, the typical investor can incur as much 1000 bps on an annual basis in expenses. By utilizing efficient index funds such as the Vanguard 500 Index (18 bps) or the Fidelity Spartan Index (10 bps for $10k investment) you can outperform the "average investor".

Unfortunately, by holding index funds, you will never be on the TO ... (more)

Dacha Strategic Metals, a heavy rare earths physical trust
Thu, Dec 15, 2011, 8:55:13 AM (275 views) posted by: barry

Dacha (DCHAF.pk) is a canadian company that owns heavy rare earth metals (mostly terbium and dysprosium) in a LME warehouse in South Korea. The net-asset-value (the value of metals owned by each share of the company) is MORE than twice the share price. This basically means when you buy a share in Dacha, you are getting the rare earth metals that it holds for more than 50% discount. I have never seen a discount like this for a company that holds physical metal. Usually gold physical trust cha ... (more)

Money should be relatively easy to separate and re-combine without affecting its fundamental characteristics. An extension of this idea is that the item should be "fungible", defined as "being freely exchangeable or replaceable, in whole or in part, for another of like nature or kind."
